“We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. When the loyal opposition dies, I think the soul of America dies with it.”

Edward R. Murrow

The GOP convention and impending hurricane Isaac dominated the news wire for most of the day with the added input of giddy reporters from every media outlet imaginable sharing their observations as they land in Tampa en masse. This rather amusing billboard greeted all of them as well as convention delegates, speakers and anyone else who is flocking to the story that will consume all of us starting now:

In addition due to the proximity of Hurricane Isaac, the weather reporters have pride of place in the rundown. This bit of political/weather serendipity is what climatologists live for and I have noticed an upgrade in the clothing choices they are making due to more airtime.

Will spent most of the day in his office as usual. He has been more retrospective than usual and seems consumed in the GOP convention and campaign. I see his Tweets from time to time and he is pontificating about the Republican platform. I suspect he is working through the loss of the debate by debating his followers and sending missives to the competing media.

The newsroom team’s demeanor has been subdued today which is not unusual for a Thursday. Sloan and Neal fluctuate between attacking and ignoring each other. I don’t really know what is going on and have made it a point not to get involved or ask any questions. I catch Don and Maggie glaring at each other from time to time and Jim and Gary buried themselves in campaign finance research on the Sunshine Foundation Reporting Group web site.

Slammed in meetings all afternoon until now, happy to finally be heading home!
